The UC Berkeley Cleantech Investment in India roundtable is designed for executives and experts ready to engage and mobilize around specific opportunities for cleantech investment and acceleration in India. Participants will have access to opportunities, networks, and follow on engagement, such as investor events and the Delhi Collaboratory (separately hosted) in February 2010.
Program Description
The UC Berkeley Cleantech Investment in India Roundtable is a one day forum of interactive sessions designed to provide a portfolio of opportunities, expert framing of each topic, and interactive cross-sector dialogue to accelerate innovation into the marketplace. in a collaborative environment.
Sponsored by the Berkeley-India Joint Leadership on Energy and Environment (BIJLEE), the sustainability venture capital firm Environmental Capital Group (ECG), and industry leader Applied Materials, the program will feature speaker/facilitators leading discussion on topics such as smart grids, ultra mega solar thermal power plants, IP innovation, and alternative investment models.
Methodology
The Cleantech Investment in India program connects active investors, entrepreneurs, and actors from across government, non-profit, philanthropic and private areas around Cleantech and India to foster investment and ongoing collaboration. UC Berkeley has designed a highly focused, investment-driven education program with a focus on supporting investment into Cleantech in India. Using the lens of common opportunity, the program is designed to allow participants to learn, network and invest in one of the world’s most exciting up-and-coming sectors.
Participants are also invited to attend a follow up Collaboratory in Delhi, India in February 2010 in partnership with Cleantech Austral Asia, in order to capitalize on investment opportunities identified during the program.

Framed by BIJLEE professors, the technology focus of the program will highlight opportunities identified by the technology’s ability to create a meaningful impact on India’s climate change conundrum, be immediately scaled and generate returns for investors.

Financing
In developing countries, its not always the newest technology that makes a difference, but its ability to scale. The financing essential to enabling the deployment of technologies is not always as forth coming due to local investment infrastructure, highlighting the need to be able to leverage innovative financing mechanisms.
Collaboration
IP has long been the fortress protecting companies’ innovation assets. As new markets open and business environments change, innovative thinkers developing alternative approaches to utilizing IP as a vehicle encouraging collaboration have emerged to challenge traditional thoughts.
