"I found the "Leader as Coach" training we did at the Haas Business School to be valuable in developing me as a leader of leaders. Too often, I've focused on the strategic or tactical "things" we need to do rather than developing the people we are leading. "As scientists, our general approach when faced with personnel problems is to "fix it." We error on not listening adequately, assuming we know the answer, quickly giving that answer, and then moving on. This course gave us valuable skills such as being present, developing active listening skills then practicing them, asking open ended questions, then being critiqued by true experts at the art of open ended questions, and then having practical aids in templates and exercises with each other. The technique of looking into the philosophy, then actually practicing the technique helped bring to life what was meant, and allowed us to really question the approaches. Again, as scientists, we wanted templates and real experience. Finally, having a real person the last half of the second day to coach, then having the follow-up meeting really gave us a chance to try what we had learned. There were many intangibles that occurred during the class. For example, I am fortunate to have a strong team and this class strengthened that team. The two days allowed me to mix up the peer-to-peer dynamics, which opened up new networking opportunities that continue strong a year after the class. Having two days allows for trust to develop that does not happen over one day, and that second day I saw more honest communication that has again continued a year later. The coaching skills of active listening and asking open ended questions helped facilitate that trust and honest communication. I have since moved to another part of the organization and this group did not take Leader as Coach. Once money becomes available, I will have them take this course. I think the skills captured in this class (active listening, developing open-ended questions, coaching others to take responsibility for themselves) are critical as leaders work to grow their employees, and I think the intangible benefit of strengthening a team add significant value that make this class worth the participants time."
