Doug Bowie has enjoyed a close relationship with the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary, since 1994, where he was Director of Executive Programs for six years and now acts as Academic Director, Leadership Programs.  In this capacity he designs, markets and delivers public and custom programs to a wide range of clients, including  Alberta Pool, ATCO, Bantrel, Bayer Crop Science, Husky Energy, PanCanadian Petroleum, Penn West Petroleum, PrimeWest Energy, National Research Council (in Ottawa) and TorStar.
Prior to working with Haskayne, Doug was involved in wide variety of roles in the private and public sectors, including Vice-President of Petro Canada, Executive Director of the Company of Young Canadians, Assistant Under-Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and Citizenship, Executive Assistant to the Secretary of Stateas well as President of the Niagara Institute, one of Canada’s leading private organizations dedicated to leadership development and executive coaching.  

In addition to his current role at Haskayne, Doug serves as an adjunct staff member with the Center for Creative Leadership and an associate of Discovery Learning, both of which are located in Greensboro, N.C.  Doug is also the Chairman of the Board for the not-for profit foundation, the Learning Centre at Ghost River Crossing.

Jim Dewald is an Assistant Professor in the Strategy and Global Management Area at the Haskayne School of Business. He holds a PhD (Business Strategy) from the University of Calgary, and B.Sc. (Civil Engineering) and MBA (Organization Theory) degrees from the University of Alberta. His principal research areas include strategic decision-making, and cognitive resilience. Jim has several published academic articles, along with two book chapters and two books. He also co-writes the urban design column for the Calgary Herald, and is the Calgary Eyeopener (CBC Radio) Real Estate columnist.

Prior to earning his Ph.D., Jim spent over two decades working in various private and public sector organizations, including as CEO to two major real-estate development companies. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board for HomeCo Inc., a Trustee of Boardwalk REIT, and as a partner in Peters-Dewald Land Company Inc. Jim is a member of the Academy of Management.

Jim has received several awards and scholarships over the years, including the Alberta Real Estate Graduate Scholarship, the McLeod Young Weir Graduate Scholarship, the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship best paper award. In 1999, Jim was recognized as Calgary's Citizen of the Year.

Dr. Loren Falkenberg is an Associate Professor in the Human Resources and Organizational Dynamics Area at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. Falkenberg is a member of the Human Resources and Organizational Dynamics Area of the Haskayne School of Business. She actively teaches in Executive Programs as well undergraduate and graduate courses in business negotiations and business ethics. Loren has a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and an MBA from Queen's University.

For almost 20 years, Loren has been involved in research ethics. She has been chair in research ethics committess/boards at all levels in the University of Calgary and currently is a member of the National Council on Ethics in Human Research.

Loren has published in the Journal of Business Ethics, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, and has won four best paper awards. She has worked with different energy companies on their corporate social responsibility reporting and has published papers in this area. Her current research interests are in the areas of NGO/corporate relationships, organizational learning, and efficient business negotiations. She is a section editor with the Journal of Business Ethics.

Dr. Francis Hartman is a Professor in the Project Management Specialization in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary, Schulich School of Engineering. Dr. Hartman has over 20 years of industrial experience in the management of projects and related fields. During this time he gained experience on over $6 billion worth of projects in Canada, the United States and overseas. His academic career is a natural outgrowth of this experience, and began as an adjunct professor while still active in industry. In 1991 he joined The University of Calgary on a full time basis as the Director of the Project Management Specialization.

Research results to date include development of a new approach to project management that has improved both project performance and reliability of project completion forecasts. Dr. Hartman is currently involved in several research activities such as developing a Universal Model for Project Management, Improving management of Technological Change, and progressing in Project Planning and Risk Management effectiveness.

Along with his research, Dr. Hartman has published several books including Projects as Business Constituents & Guiding Motives, Don’t Park Your Brain Outside – a practical guide to improving shareholder value with SMART management, and The Ten Commandments of Better Contracting: A practical guide to adding value to your enterprise through more effective, SMART Contracting.

Derek Hassay joined the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary, in 2000, following five years as a faculty member at Lakehead University and as a sessional instructor at the University of Manitoba. He holds a BBA from the University of New Brunswick, an MBA from McMaster University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba. Prior to pursuing his doctorate, Derek was the Marketing and Advertising Manager for Stewart Warner Corporation, a Canadian subsidiary of BTR. At Stewart Warner Derek was responsible for Automotive Aftermarket, Industrial and OEM division product marketing. Derek has also held sales positions in business-to-business and consumer markets.

Derek's teaching interests include consumer behavior, sales management and marketing channels and he is currently teaching courses in Marketing Management and Consumer Behavior. He was a recipient of both the Students' Union Teaching Excellence Honorable Mention Award and the Commerce Undergraduate Society Award for Outstanding Teaching and Learning in 2001-2002.

Derek's research interests include relationship marketing (B2B and B2C), marketing channels and entrepreneurship. He has published and presented his work at conferences of the Academy of Marketing Science, the American Marketing Association, American Psychological Association, Association for Consumer Research, and the Canadian Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. He has also published in Psychology and Marketing. In conjunction with his research interests, Derek is currently a member of the Academic Advisory Council for the Direct Selling Education Foundation of Canada and is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of Vector Marketing.

Allan Ingelson holds degrees from the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary (LLB) and University of Denver (LLM). His graduate work was in international natural resources and environmental law and policy. In 1991 he was admitted to the Law Society of Alberta as a Barrister & Solicitor and holds memberships in the Canadian Bar Association, the Law Society of Alberta and Beta Gamma Sigma. Allan holds joint appointments at the Haskayne School of Business and the Faculty of Law, University of Calgary.

Journals in which he has published scholarly papers include the Journal of Energy and Natural Resources Law, the Journal of Natural Resources and Environmental Law, the Natural Resources Journal and the Water Law Review. His research focuses on regulation of the Canadian and international energy and mining sectors. He has chaired appeals, undergraduate program review and merit committees.

Allan recently served as Associate Dean (Undergraduate and Graduate Programs) and Acting Associate Dean (MBA Programs). In 2006-2007, he was honored with the Faculty Member Superior Service Award, and was elected to the Board of Directors of the University of Calgary Faculty Association.

Mr. Wayne Irvine, CA, CFA is an Instructor in the Accounting Area at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. After graduating from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1980, Wayne worked for 12 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers completing his career at the firm as a senior manager in the audit group. In addition to client commitments, he was also responsible for coordinating the firm's in-house training programs.

In 1992 he commenced his academic career by taking a full-time teaching position at the University of Calgary, and a part-time position at Mount Royal College. Three years later, he accepted a full time tenure track position at the College but continued to teach on a part-time basis at the University of Calgary. He then accepted a tenure track position at the University on January 1, 2007. For the past 15 years, Wayne has continued his involvement with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta by instructing case writing courses for UFE candidates, and by writing and marking Qualification Exam questions.

He has received funding from the Chartered Accountants Education Foundation for developing a study guide for an auditing course at Athabasca University and for designing the computerized lab component for the intermediate financial accounting course at the University of Calgary.

He was nominated for teaching excellence awards by the Student’s union at the University of Calgary in 1989, 1993, 1994 and 1998 and received an honorable mention in 1997 and the actual award in 2004. He was nominated for an excellence in teaching award at Mount Royal College in 1995 and was the recipient of Chartered Accountants Education Foundation teaching excellence award in 2001.

Dr. Anne Kleffner is an Associate Professor in the Risk Management and Insurance Area at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. Dr. Kleffner joined the University of Calgary in 1992 and is an associate professor of Risk Management and Insurance at the Haskayne School of Business. She was appointed chair of the Finance Area in July 2005. Her educational background includes a BSBA with a major in Finance from Creighton University, and a PhD in Applied Economics and Managerial Science from The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

Dr. Kleffner primarily teaches in the areas of property and liability insurance and risk management. She also teaches about Enterprise Risk Management in the Director’s Education Program at the Haskayne School. Dr. Kleffner is currently a member of the American Risk and Insurance Association and the Risk Theory Seminar as well as an associate editor of The Journal of Insurance Issues.

Dr. Kleffner has published articles in both the risk management and the property/liability insurance areas. Her main research interests are insurance distribution, automobile liability systems, and enterprise risk management. Some of her recent publications include "The Evolution of the Role of Risk Communication in Effective Risk Management" and "The Effect of Corporate Governance on the Use of Enterprise Risk Management: Evidence from Canada," both from the Risk Manangement and Insurance Review.

Dr. Eva Klein joined the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary in January 2008 as a professor of Human Resources and Organizational Development and as an Executive in Residence.  She teaches Leadership and Interpersonal Behaviour, Organizational Change and Compensation Management to undergraduate, graduate and executive audiences.  Before coming to Haskayne, she was a Teaching Fellow at the London Business School for six years, where she taught in executive development programs for such clients as Kone Elevators, Nokia China, China Mobile and Deloitte and Touche. Prior to moving to the UK, she implemented a wide range of organisational change initiatives at the senior management level for many corporations, including Investors Group of Canada, CSX as well as several US and Canadian banks.  She also served as Vice president of HR at Sanyo Canada Inc. for seven years, a position that provided her with the opportunity to design and implement a variety of compensation, performance, succession planning, stress management and work-life balance programs. In addition to her various teaching and professional corporate experiences, Dr. Klein has worked as an executive coach for over two decades and is well-versed in the application of numerous psychometric evaluation and personality profiling instruments.

Dr. Klein’s current research interests include identifying the characteristics of late bloomers, (i.e. those who succeed later in their careers).  She is also interested in talent management, specifically with respect to the obstacles impeding professional women’s re-entry as well as the obstacles preventing the integration of professional immigrants.

Dr. Klein is an associate of the Center for Creative Leadership as well as a member of the International Network of Executive Women, American Psychological Association and British Psychological Society.  She holds a B.Sc. (Honours Mathematics), M.Sc. (Mathematical Statistics) from McGill University, M.A. (Psycholinguistics) from Stanford University and a Ph.D. (in Clinical Psychology) from Rutgers University. She has been licensed to practise Psychology in the states of New York and New Jersey, Ontario, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Dr. Lertzman holds a PhD in Ecological Sustainability and Community Development from the School of Community and Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia. Drawing on a broad interdisciplinary background, his teaching, research and professional work puts him at the forefront of efforts to bridge traditional ecological knowledge and Western science in sustainable development. His passion for ecology and culture has brought him to Indigenous communities throughout the Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountains, the Great Plains, Eastern Woodlands and Boreal Forests, the Arctic, the Amazon and the United Kingdom.

David was the first Suncor Energy Visiting Scholar at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary, where he is now adjunct assistant professor of Environmental Management and Sustainable Development, senior associate and former acting director of the International Institute for Resource Industries and Sustainability Studies (IRIS). He teaches undergraduate, MBA and executive courses in the Business and Environment Area. His innovative course on leadership in sustainable development is an intensive management retreat that bridges leadership, team building, cross-cultural appreciation and sustainable development in a wilderness setting. David also teaches in the MSc Program in Sustainable Energy Development for Latin America and the Caribbean in Quito, Ecuador (a joint project between the Haskayne School of Business and the Latin American Energy Organization).

In addition to his teaching at Haskayne, David serves as a research associate of the Arctic Institute of North America, University of Calgary, and as an associate of the International Institute for Child Rights and Development at the University of Victoria. He is also an active member of Rediscovery, an Indigenous based cross-cultural wilderness program for young people. David consults as a sustainable development specialist, cross-cultural facilitator and leadership trainer, environmental educator and public speaker. He has worked with government, communities, the private and non-profit sectors. David is also an accomplished singer/songwriter, storyteller and multi-instrumentalist, all skills he brings to bear on his teaching, inspirational public speaking and other professional work.

Based on the unique and exceptional learning experiences that he has created for his participants, David received the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award at the Haskayne School of Business in 2008.

Dr. Michael Robinson, CFA, ICD.D is the Associate Dean for Executive Education at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. Dr. Robinson, who joined the Haskayne School of Business in 1990, previously taught at Wilfrid Laurier University and at the Richard Ivey School of Business, the University of Western Ontario. During his non-academic career, he has worked as a computer programmer, a systems analyst, and as a venture capitalist. In addition to his academic degrees, he is the holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation granted by the Association for Investment Management and Research, and the certified directors’ designation (ICD.D) issued by the Canadian Institute of Corporate Directors.

Dr. Robinson has taught many courses in the undergraduate, MBA, EMBA and PhD programs at the Haskayne School of Business and was the recipient of the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence for the academic year 2005-2006. He is currently the Academic Director of the Director’s Education Program in the Haskayne school and was recently appointed to the role of Associate Dean (Executive Education) for the Haskayne school.

He has consulted to several organizations in the Canadian oil industry, including Petro-Canada, NOVA Chemical, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), and Royalty and Tenure Branch of Alberta Resource Development, on such issues as the cost of capital and capital structure. He also has extensive experience on the Board of Directors of private and non-profit firms, as well as on the boards of government entities.

Peter D. Sherer is an associate professor in the Human Resource and Organization Dynamics at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. He teaches MBA, Ph.D., executive MBA and executive education courses in the areas related to human resource management and strategy and has been the recipient of six teaching awards during his years at the Haskayne School of Business, the University of Oregon, and the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania). In 2005, he was recognized as one of the top MBA professors in Canada by Canadian Business.

Professor Sherer's research focuses at the intersection between strategy and human resources. He has published a number of articles in leading journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Industrial Relations, Journal of Labor Economics, Organization Science, and Personnel Psychology. His work has also appeared in major research volumes that include Research in Organizational Behavior, Research in Personnel/Human Resources, Research in the Sociology of Organizations, and Trends in Organizational Behavior.

The principal context of Professor Scherer’s research has been that of professional service firms and covers such issues as industry evolution and strategic groups, firm reputation, leveraging of human assets, inter-firm movement of talent, and institutional change. Professor Sherer (along with K. Lee) was awarded the Best Paper of 2002 in the Academy of Management Journal by the Academy of Management for research on institutional change in law firms. The paper also has been recognized by the editorial board of the Academy of Management Journal (February, 2006) as one of the most interesting academic journal articles in management over the last 100 years. He recently was appointed to the editorial board of the Academy of Management Journal for the fourth time. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Philip K. Verleger, Jr. is President of PKVerleger LLC and a Senior Advisor to The Brattle Group, a Cambridge, Massachusetts economics consulting firm, Dr. Verleger specializes in the study of energy commodity markets.

The author of over 100 articles and books on energy economics, Dr. Verleger has testified frequently as an expert witness for parties in private disputes and as an independent authority to the U.S. Congress. His testimony before Congress has addressed regulation, taxation, the behavior of markets, and most recently, mergers.

Dr. Verleger has held positions at the President's Council of Economic Advisers, the U.S. Treasury, the Institute for International Economics, Yale University, the University of California, and various firms in the private sector. He is a member of the National Petroleum Council and the Council of Foreign Relations. Dr. Verleger received his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971.

Dr. Harrie Vrendenburg holds the Suncor Energy Chair in Competitive Strategy & Sustainable Development at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. Dr. Vredenburg is Professor of Strategic Management at the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business and is the Suncor Energy Chair in Competitive Strategy and Sustainable Development, a Haskayne research chair affiliated with the University's Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment & Economy (ISEEE). He was the founding director (1994-2007) of Haskayne's International Institute for Resource Industries and Sustainability Studies (IRIS). Both IRIS and the academic programs were founded on Brundtland Commission principles of developing energy and natural resources globally in a sustainable manner.

Dr. Vredenburg's research, focused on competitive strategy, innovation, sustainable development and corporate governance in global energy and natural resource industries, has been published in the leading international management journals including Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, MIT Sloan Management Review, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, Journal of Business Administration, Innovation, Journal of Business Ethics, International Journal of Business Strategy, American Journal of Public Health, and in industry-based publications such as the Journal of Petroleum Technology.

Professor Vredenburg is a member of the board of directors and audit and compensation committees of Petrobank, a Calgary-headquartered publicly-traded (TSX: PBG) energy company with a market capitalization of $4.5 billion. Petrobank's four business units are engaged in global industry-leading innovation - the heavy oil business unit, Whitesands, is a heavy oil/in-situ oil sands developer in northern Alberta and Saskatchewan which is the first to use new lower cost and lower environmental impact patented process technologies (THAITM and CAPRITM) which are expected to revolutionize the industry; the Canadian business unit is engaged in conventional oil and gas development with a focus on new technological processes in southern Saskatchewan's rich Bakken light oil resource play; the Latin American business unit, Petrominerales, 76.5% owned by Petrobank, is publicly-traded (TSX: PMG) and is a conventional oil explorer and producer with a focus on Colombia and is also the largest owner of heavy oil leases in that country; Archon Technologies is an R&D business unit focusing on heavy oil/oil sands technology innovation and global commercialization.
