Nonprofit Boards: Effective Governance in Nonprofit Organizations Today

Nora Silver

Nora Silver is Director of the Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership and an Adjunct Professor at the Haas School of Business. Nora has founded and directed nonprofit organizations and consulted with dozens of nonprofit boards on strategy and organizational development. Her course teaching includes Strategic Management of Nonprofit Organizations and Social Sector Solutions.


Faculty & Speakers

Tom Courtney has taught over 2,500 nonprofit employees and volunteers financial management and accounting and has authored several articles for the nonprofit field. Tom teaches Financial Management of Nonprofit Organizations at the Haas School of Business and the Goldman School of Public Policy. Tom has held senior management positions in the nonprofit sector, including Chief Financial Officer and Director of Finance.


Paul Jansen is a Director Emeritus from McKinsey & Company, where he co-founded and led the Global Nonprofit Practice serving leading nonprofits and foundations on issues of strategy and organization. He is the author of many articles and reports challenging sector beliefs about performance, including a co-authored report entitled, "The Dynamic Board: Lessons from High-Performing Nonprofits." Paul is a member of the Aspen Institute Forum for the Future of Higher Education and serves on the Boards of the San Francisco Zoological Society and CARE USA.


Jane Wei-Skillern is a Visiting Assistant Professor from Harvard Business School, and the author of many cases, articles and books on social entrepreneurship in the nonprofit sector. Jane has taught Executive Education at Harvard Business School, and Achieving Social Impact at the Haas School of Business.


Kimberly Wright-Violich is President of Schwab Charitable. She has held leadership positions at major nonprofit organizations in Northern California since 1989, including Board Director and Vice Chair at KQED Public TV-FM, Board Director and President of the Junior League of San Francisco, Vice President of the Board of the San Francisco Volunteer Center, President of the Youth In Arts board of directors and president and board member of two private schools.
