Strategic Decision Making for Scientists, Engineers, and Project Managers

Frank Schultz

Frank C. Schultz is a faculty member in the Management of Organizations and Economic Analysis & Policy groups of the Walter A. Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Schultz’ educational background includes a B.A. in Accounting, an MBA in Finance/General Management and a Ph.D. in Strategic Management.

Dr. Schultz’s teaching background is extensive and diverse. Over the past seventeen years, he has taught in the Executive Education, Executive MBA, Weekend MBA, Evening MBA, Full-Time MBA and undergraduate programs in business schools including the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley, the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management at Michigan State University, the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, and the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, as well as the Advisory Board Company’s Physician Leadership Academy. His teaching has included courses in Strategic Leadership, Strategic Management, Advanced Competitive Analysis, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics, and Sales Force Management.

Dr. Schultz’s research interests focus on the strategic leadership and decision making of CEOs and senior executives, the methods of balancing stakeholder interests, and the manner in which the mental models of executives influence the evolution of firms and industries. His most recent research concerns the role of Expertise in organizations and how individuals and organizations can improve their performance by engaging in Deliberate Practice.

Prior to pursuing his Ph.D., Dr. Schultz worked for Fortune 500 companies such as IBM, Chevron, and Pillsbury as well as two entrepreneurial ventures of his own. He has diverse corporate functional experience in areas such as accounting, finance, and marketing, and has faced the challenges associated with integrating these functional perspectives. This has generated his interest in research, teaching, and consulting in the areas of Leadership, Strategic Management, and Strategic Decision Making. As a result of his experience, he has completed consulting engagements with a variety of companies, including a national home builder, a global food manufacturer, a medical device manufacturer, a global telecommunications company, a Swiss multinational manufacturer, and numerous healthcare systems.


Nicole Johnson

Nicole Johnson has been an Assistant Professor in the Accounting Group at the Haas School of Business since 2005. Her areas of expertise include managerial performance measurement, incentive alignment and transfer pricing. She received a Ph.D. in Accounting from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University in 2005, a Master’s Degree in Statistics from Stanford University in 2002 and a Master’s Degree in Accounting from Brigham Young University in 1996. She has worked previously as a database developer and a lecturer at Brigham Young University.
