Video Transcript

Alex Budak: Intellectual courage is the willingness to question your own assumptions, entertain opposing viewpoints, and admit that you don't know everything. It's shifting from this false belief that leaders have to have all the answers, and instead showing that leaders are the best learners and inspire others on the team to be great learners too. The presence of intellectual courage creates psychological safety, it fuels learning, and even fosters innovation.

The first way to lead with intellectual courage is to interrogate your own thinking and to do so publicly. When you share an idea, say something like, here's a logic that I've used, but what might it be missing? What are some of my blind spots here?

The second way is to detach your identity from your ideas. Celebrate the moments where you're proven wrong with just as much energy as those moments where you're proven right. Doing so not only allows you to lead with intellectual courage, it's signals to your team that it's safe for them to question their ideas as well. We can separate our own ideas from our own ego, and in doing so, practice intellectual courage.
