Alex Budak: Social courage is the willingness to speak out or stand apart from the group despite the risk of embarrassment, exclusion or repetitional damage. There are so many people that stay silent at work, not because they don't have good ideas they do, but because they fear rejection. Solomon Asch's classic experiments around conformity show just how powerful that pull of social norms can be. But it's social courage that allows you to stand up for what you believe in and to speak out even when it's hard.

The first way to lead with social courage is to name the risk. Then speak. Don't apologize, but acknowledge the stakes. You might start by saying something like it may be unpopular, but or this goes against the grain, but I think we need to say... and then you say what you need to say. The second way, as a leader, is to make sure that you are rewarding principled dissent.

One thing you might do is nominate a rotating contrarian chair. At each meeting, you take turns, and one person's job is to make sure that the unspoken is spoken, that they have the freedom, they have the confidence to speak up. And when you do so, it signals not only are you open to social courage, you build it in your team as well.
