Panos N. Patatoukas is a Full Professor and the L.H. Penney Chair in Accounting at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. He holds a PhD, MPhil, and MA in Accounting & Finance from Yale University, an MSc from the London School of Economics (with distinction), and a BA from the Athens University of Economics & Business, where he graduated as valedictorian.
His research bridges academia and practice, addressing both micro-to-macro and macro-to-micro questions through interdisciplinary capital markets work that spans accounting, corporate finance, law, and economics. He specializes in financial reporting, sustainability reporting, corporate valuation, and supply chain analysis, with a focus on measuring economic activity at both the firm and macro levels. His work also explores nowcasting and forecasting using financial and alternative data, including environmental metrics and governance indicators.
Panos’s work has been recognized for both its scholarly impact and its teaching excellence. He is a two-time recipient of the Notable Contributions to Accounting Literature Award, awarded by the American Accounting Association and the AICPA—first for his research on supply chain links and firm-level valuation, and later for contributions to macro accounting and market-level valuation. For his contributions in the classroom, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the UC Berkeley Chancellor and five Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Awards from Berkeley Haas MBA students. He was also named a Top-10 Business School Professor Under 40 by Fortune.
In addition to research and teaching, Panos has contributed to the Haas community through a range of leadership roles. He has served as Director of the Center for Financial Reporting & Management, PhD Field Advisor for the Accounting Group (multiple terms), and a member of the Academic Senate’s Committee on Teaching. He is currently Co-Director of the Sustainable & Impact Finance Initiative and a Core Faculty Fellow at the Berkeley Center for Law & Business.
Panos is also deeply committed to expanding access to financial education and making academic insights actionable. He co-founded the Business Review at Berkeley, a student-led financial journalism platform, and directs the Economic Equity and Financial Education Program, in collaboration with the PG&E Corporation Foundation. He has developed and led executive education programs—including Financial Data Analysis for Leaders, Intelligent Investing for Everyone, and Fundamentals of Corporate Finance and Reporting for Lawyers, as well as custom programs for Fortune 500 companies, privately held firms, and startups.
As an extension of this mission, Panos co-founded Yowlo, a public benefit corporation focused on democratizing financial data analysis and valuation for everyday investors. He also contributes to macroeconomic insight as a regular panelist in the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s Survey of Professional Forecasters, the longest-running quarterly survey of its kind in the United States.
