When we draw the distinction between a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and a Minimum Useful Demo (MUD), people almost always focus initially on the last word of each term: “Product” vs. “Demo.” This distinction is important, and changing the words helps right-size and reset objectives, expectations and communications for entrepreneurs and corporate innovators while they work to validate (or invalidate) their business models. When they focus only on that final word, however, people miss a significant part of the value of the MUD concept, the distinction between viability and usefulness.
